Another Sad Change

Trigger Warning: Pet Death

For those of you who aren’t following my social media, I had to put down Sherbert on March 21st. It’s taken me some time to write out what happened.

We noticed she was drooling.  She only wanted to eat soft food, but she was drinking and using the litter box like normal.  So I called the vet, thinking it was a bad tooth troubling her.  We can get her in today, the admin said when I described her symptoms.

Mom decided to come with me for the appointment to get out of the house.   It was a good thing she did.  We discussed the ‘what if this isn’t a bad tooth’ scenario, but didn’t think that it would happen.

Sherbert was whisked away to the back almost as soon as we arrived.  That was unusual, but she had peed in her carrier during the trip. They said they would clean her up and check on her.  The vet, who knew Sherbert since she was a kitten, examined her maybe ten minutes and came in with tears in her eyes.  “I’m so sorry to have to tell you this so soon after losing Popsicle.”

My stomach dropped.

She explained that the reason for Sherbert’s drooling was that there was tumor in her jaw.  Untreatable.  And she was in pain.

So Mom and I did the only thing we could.  We cuddled her and said our goodbyes.  And we were both there, loving her and telling her what a good girl she was as she took her last breath.

I thought the house was quiet after losing Popsicle.  Now the silence echoes.  Julius is still confused, not sure where his sisters are.  All we can do is try to reassure him the best we can.

So give your fur babies, or scale babies, or whatever animal companion you have all the cuddles while you can.

This breaks my heart. It is so hard to say goodbye, even when it’s the only thing you can do for our furry family.
