Show Up or Self-care?

Eighteen days into 2021 and my intentions to reach my goals have already fallen by the wayside. I haven’t spent much time working on writing the last two weeks, and I wrote this post late Sunday night.

To be fair, I am living through a pandemic and an attempted coup. (And if you don’t think that it was an attempted coup by pro-Trump people, stop reading this blog right now.) That’s enough to throw off any schedule. Add to that I’m still working full time at my day job (and working from home isn’t an option) and still being the primary caretaker for my mother, and I am stretched extremely thin.

I’ve talked to people about the situation I’m in, and I get advice that can be split into one of two schools.  The first one is to show up and get the work done.  The other is to practice self-care during stressful times, and resume writing when things are easier. My problem is that the time I have for self-care and my time I have for showing up ends up being the same time.

What’s the solution? I’m not sure.

Right now the plan is to go in a one-night-on, one-night-off schedule. Monday night is my ‘night on’ and I will get some editing done. I’ll see how it goes and then adapt it from their.
